Ponorogo Regent Sugiri Sancoko launched mass reforestation by planting 3 million trees of various types in the Ponorogo district. This is because signs of climate change in the form of global warming have been felt recently due to high levels of air police in various parts of the world.
“At the end of December, we will carry out mass reforestation when the rainy season comes,” explained Regent Sugiri.
Reforestation has been defined as the process of rehabilitating critical land outside forest areas with the aim of restoring, maintaining and improving land function. At the same time, growing trees will neutralize polluted air so that climate change is not too extreme.
Through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, PT Pegadaian (Persero) planted 800 trees of various types in the Mount Thekil area in Bulu Lor Village, Jambon District, Ponorogo Regency.
Regent Sugiri Sancoko, Head of the Environmental Service (DLH) Gulang Winarno, and Acting Head of the Ponorogo Agriculture, Food Security and Fisheries Service (Dismaintain) Heri Sutrisno participated in the greening movement on Mount Thekil, on Tuesday (28/11/2023).
Head of DLH Ponorogo, Gulang Winarno, assessed that the action to plant trees at the end of November was the right time. This is because groundwater supplies are starting to run low after a long drought. In fact, a number of water sources have dried up.
“Soon the rainy season will come which guarantees that the trees will grow. “One of the benefits of reforestation is improving groundwater quality, apart from preventing erosion and flooding, as well as maintaining air quality,” said Gulang.
On the same occasion, Sugiri Sancoko handed over certificates for the National Main Category Climate Village award to a number of villages in Ponorogo. Among them, Selur Village and Mrayan Village in Ngrayun District; Nongkodono Village (Kauman District); Lembah Village and Trisono Village in Babadan District; and Mojorejo Village in Jetis District.
