Tens of Thousands of Santri Crowded the Paseban Alun-Alun area to take part in the National Santri Day Commemoration

Tens of thousands took part in a healthy walk at the peak of National Santri Day commemoration, Sunday (5/11/2023). The typical characteristics of santri can be seen from the health walk participants wearing Muslim clothing. The female students wear sarongs, while the female students wear Muslim clothing with a headscarf.

Regent Sugiri Sancoko felt the flame of the spirit of the Jihad Resolution initiated by Hadratussyekh KH Hasyim Asy’ari on October 22 1945 and then repeated in Ponorogo Square.

Student representatives from 600 Islamic madrasahs gathered in the large field area and started in front of Paseban. ”There came in droves from various corners of Ponorogo, extraordinary students. “This is a milestone that Ponorogo is a Santri City,” said Regent Sugiri Sancoko.

  ”Commemorating Santri Day means there is a spirit that we must emulate and remind young people. “The fighting spirit of the kiai and santri continues to contribute actively in advancing the country by fighting for jihad in various aspects of life,” he explained.

From the front of Paseban, the students walked clockwise along Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Urip Sumoharjo, Jalan HOS Tjokroaminoto, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, and returned to the starting line. Pantia provides the main prize in the form of an Umrah and various attractive door prizes.

Meanwhile, Head of the Ponorogo Regency Regional Secretariat’s Welfare Section, Hadi Rusdyanto, revealed that the series of activities commemorating National Santri Day also strengthened Ponorogo’s title as Santri City. Starting with a call for all levels of society to wear Muslim clothing from October 16 to October 24 2023. Koran sermons were also held simultaneously at all Jami’ Mosques in 21 sub-districts, on October 20.

This continued with a big rally which was attended by around 6,000 santri throughout Ponorogo, right on National Santri Day, 22 October. Apart from that, there was a hadrah competition, a millennial santri seminar, a wayang santri performance, and finally a healthy walk with participants from among the santri. “The series of National Santri Day commemorations is also to show that Ponrogo is a Santri City,” stressed Hadi.
