
Grebeg Suro celebration in 2023 was officially held in conjunction with the 527th Anniversary of the Ponorogo Regency by the Ponorogo Regency Government.
This year’s Grebeg Suro was marked by the 28th Reog Ponorogo National Festival (FNRP) which was attended by 29 groups. Consisting of 12 groups from Ponorogo, and 17 groups from outside Ponorogo, including DKI Jakarta, Jogjakarta, Palembang, Surabaya and Malang.
Grebeg Suro in the previous year was often enlivened with the Mini Reog Festival (FRM), now the Regency Government divides into two categories, namely the 19th Youth Reog Festival (FRR), attended by 19 participants from Ponorogo, and the Reog Children’s Festival (FRA), as well as Festival activities Reog Wayang Golek.
“In addition to the 29 agendas for the Grebeg Suro celebration, this year we are also holding FRR and FRA. In the past, it was known as FRM,” said Judha Slamet Sarwo Edi, Head of the Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports Office (Disbudparpora) at the opening of Grebeg Suro in Alun-alun Ponorogo, Sunday (09/07/2023).

Ponorogo Regent Sugiri Sancoko revealed, apart from being an annual routine agenda. The Grebeg Suro celebration is also a masterpiece of Ponorogo culture for the world. This is at the same time proof that Reog Ponorogo deserves to become a UNESCO Incredible Cultural Heritage (ICH).

“The Grebeg Suro celebration is an effort to preserve culture, while at the same time maintaining the existence of Reog Ponorogo for the younger generation. Alhamdulillah, in 2023 the Government of the Republic of Indonesia will propose Reog Ponorogo to become ICH Unesco, and will be tried in 2024,” he said. Sugiri admitted that the Grebeg Suro celebration also aims to improve the economy of the Ponorogo people. Both from the Arts sector, SMEs or the Creative economy. He hopes that the Grebeg Suro celebration will increasingly become a tourist magnet in the archipelago and internationally. So that this annual event has always been the prima donna of Ponorogo tourism for tourists.
