Art of Reog Ponorogo is included in Unesco’s ICH List for cultural heritage

This original art from Ponorogo Regency has now officially entered the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) submission list or UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

Director General of Culture of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) Hilmar Farid when meeting Ponorogo Regent Sugiri Sancoko at the regent’s official residence confirmed the good news, Saturday (01/07/2023).

Hilmar said Reog Ponorogo was included in the ICH submission list, listed on the official UNESCO website, which is headquartered in Paris. Unesco’s official website writes that the performing arts Reog Ponorogo has been included in the list with proposal number 01969, and with the Urgent Safeguarding List (USL) category dated March 30 2022. After officially being included in the list, Reog Ponorogo will be tried by Unesco in Paris to be patented as an inheritance intangible culture from Ponorogo, Indonesia.

“We are proposing this year for Reog to become Unesco’s ICH. Alhamdulillah, yesterday we received good news directly from Paris, that Reog has entered the Unesco trial list. And will be tried in 2024 for designation as ICH,” he said.

even though it is included in the Unesco trial list, there are several improvements in the Dossier document submitting ICH belonging to Reog Ponorogo. Wilmar confirmed that the possibility of Reog being designated as a world intangible cultural heritage is quite large following the Unesco trial.

“Indeed there is an improvement but only a little. In the proposal document (Dossier.red), the additional information needed, we have already communicated with the regent, and we will work on a team of experts soon this month as well. Maybe in two to three weeks the city will send repairs to UNESCO, and just waiting for trial,” he said.

Ponorogo Regent Sugiri Sancoko said he was happy with the good news that Reog Ponorogo had been included in the Unesco ICH trial list. This has become medicine for Reog artists and the Ponorogo community who were disappointed because Reog failed to be included in the Unesco ICH proposal.

“Alhamdulillah, the dreams of the artists, the dreams of the Ponorogo people have come true, our joint struggle to make Reog Ponorogo recognized by the world will soon be realized,” he said.

Sugiri added, after receiving the good news that he was included in the Unesco ICH assembly list in 2024, his party immediately instructed the Ponorogo Tourism, Youth and Sports Culture Service (Disbudparpora) to coordinate with the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, to speed up the process of repairing the Dossier.

“We have asked the Disbudparporapora to immediately coordinate with the Ministry of Education and Culture for the repair process. Hopefully it will be completed quickly so that the repairs to Dossier Reog are complete and the repairs can be sent to Unesco,” he concluded. Adv/Man
